SPECAL EDITION – EXCEEDINGLY, ABUNDANTLY, ABOVE
Week 3: EXCEEDINGLY, ABUNDANTLY, ABOVE
During this study, we will be doing a ‘deep dive’ into a scriptural passage. It is strongly encouraged that you study the passage and entire chapter ahead of the study. Also be prepared with your research tools, for example Google or your study Bible, as you will need to reference it during the study. Spend time answering and discussing each question with the intention to gain sufficient understanding to help your own private Bible study as you further explore these topics.
Study Chapters: Ephesians 1-3
- Break down Ephesians 3:20: What does “exceedingly, abundantly above all we ask or think” mean?
- What is the connection between this promise and the power “at work in us”?
- How does this verse serve as a climax to Paul’s prayer and the entire first half of Ephesians?
Pilot text
Ephesians 3:20-21 20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Discussion Points
Consider the Greek phrase hyperekperissou (exceedingly abundantly). Where else is this kind of language used in scripture?
- Can you think of other examples in scripture where God did far more than expected?
- What limits do we often place on God’s ability or willingness to act? Where do these limits come from?
- How can we cultivate a mindset of expectation without falling into presumption?
Closing thoughts:
God’s power is not merely sufficient. It is extravagant, going beyond meeting needs to exceed expectations. But this extravagance isn’t random or indulgent. It’s deeply intentional, flowing from His love and perfectly aligned with His will.
To live in the reality of “exceedingly, abundantly above” requires more than belief. It requires courage; not the kind that pushes through fear for its own sake, but the kind that dares to trust in a God whose plans are bigger than our imagination. Courageous faith means stepping into purpose even when the path is not fully visible, trusting that provision is already woven into the journey.
God’s abundance is not just about what He gives but about how He gives. He may not operate within our frameworks of efficiency or predictability. Instead He often moves in ways that reveal His character: generous, creative, and loving. And when we walk in alignment with His purpose, we begin to experience that abundance not just in outcomes, but in perspective, peace, and fulfilled purpose.
So, as we reflect on this week, let us consider this: are we limiting our expectations to what feels manageable, or are we allowing God to stretch our vision? Are we walking with the kind of faith that makes room for divine extravagance – not as a luxury, but as a reflection of His nature? Our purpose must be to walk in step with His purpose. Then we don’t just receive; we overflow.
Application Questions (use scriptures to support your position):
- “It is possible to believe in God’s power, yet live without expectation.” Agree/disagree with reasons.
- “Sometimes God’s power is best displayed through limitations.” Agree/disagree with reasons.
