LG Outline August 2024 – WEEK 1

FAITH – THE MAKING OF MOSES

Week 1: The Women that saved the Nation

Introduction

During this study, we will be doing a ‘deep dive’ into a scriptural passage. It is strongly encouraged that you study the passage and entire chapter ahead of the study. Also be prepared with your research tools, for example Google or your study Bible, as you will need to reference it during the study. Spend time answering and discussing each question with the intention to gain sufficient understanding to help your own private Bible study as you further explore these topics.

Study Chapters: Exodus 1-2:10

Pilot text

Exodus 2:2-8 2 So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. 3 But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him. 5 Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. 6 And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the maiden went and called the child’s mother.

Discussion Points

  1. What was the major reason for the Egyptians’ ill treatment of the children of Israel?
  2. There were a number of women in our pilot text passage who saved the day. What was the role of each woman in this story, and why it was critical for the salvation of God’s people.
  3. Do you think it was necessary for the children of Israel to suffer in Egypt? Why?

Closing thoughts: In this passage we are introduced to fear and faith, and see in stark contrast how they impact lives. The actions of the Egyptians were driven by fear, and ultimately led to bondage and death. On the other hand, in the lives of the women in this passage, we see the light of faith shining through the darkness of fear. Their faith showed up in the courage to act despite the odds, believing God for better even if they didn’t know how ‘better’ would come. Through their faith, they were able to apprehend God’s plan for the children of Israel, and set the nation on the path to salvation.

Application Questions (use scriptures to support your position):

  1. “Only Christians can be used by God.” Agree/disagree with reasons.
  2. It is not possible for one person’s faith to deliver another person. God can only work with each person’s own faith. Agree/disagree with reasons.
